The first two verses of this song were inspired by hikes in Zion and Yosemite National Parks where elemental landforms reach like stairways into the sky. The last verse harkens to the old growth deciduous forests of my home in southern Indiana. The upper descant melody is borrowed from the old Irish โMarch of the King of Laois.โ
