Adapted from the Book of Ecclesiastes and translations from the original Hebrew by James Kugel in his book The Poems of the Bible. Kugel reveals that the opening declaration of life’s meaning made by the prophet Koheleth was not originally “All is vanity” but rather “All is breath-like, fleeting, and evanescent.” It was this idea that inspired this song.
