The soloist for “To the Holy Spirit” could be situated in some dramatic place in the performance space. He or she should take liberties with the rhythm of the song, condensing, expanding and embellishing phrases in order to personalize the text. When the whole choir comes in, the director may take similar liberties, taking care not to go too slowly, robbing the breath from sustained words at the ends of phrases.
