Grey got these two tunes from Tom Byrne. Tom told us that in Co. Sligo when a person was going to leave Ireland his or her friends would throw a party and someone would always play “The Farewell Reel” as the last tune, just before the horse and cart came to take the person to the train station. The tune was indeed played at Tom’s own farewell party. Grey plays the tunes here on the B-flat whistle and Michael Murphy plays the bodhran.
