The Brink is the story of an extremely wonderful and scary sunrise. It was late in August in the unpredictable Wyoming Wind River Range of the Rockies. I was fifteen. There were five of us, young men and women, all inexperienced climbers on a one-day excursion. We should have turned back earlier that day, but instead, we persevered to the top and then lingered over a spectacular sunset. By nightfall, after the start of an ill-timed and treacherous rappel in the dark, we were stuck. We ended up spending the entire night marooned on a narrow ledge at 13,000 feet with only each other to keep ourselves from freezing.
Singers will find that the initially tricky-looking rhythms, once learned, will feel conversational and will naturally support the narrative. The challenge is to have the diction, harmony, cutoffs and dynamics be precise and clean without becoming too stiff. In a sense, the whole choir becomes one singer-songwriter telling a story.
