Grey learned Johnny Cope from Lisa Ornstein, a great fiddler from Shaker Heights. Ohio, while they were both students at Oberlin College. Lisa got it from Bill Hicks, the fiddler in the Red Clay Ramblers, who got it from Frank George, a fiddler from West Virginia. The tune is traditional in Frank Georgeโs area of West Virginia as far as we can tell. The tune bears resemblance to the tunes and songs by the same name that are played in Ireland, Scotland, and Cape Breton. โNapoleonโs Chargeโ is another name for the West Virginia version of the tune.
