Inspired by and adapted from The Seven Blessings recited at a traditional Jewish wedding, this song, written for the wedding of my daughter, Naomi, celebrates her Jewish heritage and the joy she and her husband find in their shared livelihood as potters. “Hashem,” (masculine) and “Shekhinah” (feminine) are among the many Jewish names for God.
These blessings have specific Jewish meaning but I find that collectively they resonate universally. The first is a blessing on wine, the symbol of joy. The next three celebrate the creation, our human presence here, and the notion that we have been given divine qualities. The last three blessings celebrate a return to Eden, the creative and procreative force of the couple within their community, and all the expressions of joy that are shared in their new bond.
