How many singers are singing or studying this score? Our business relies on the purchase of one original score per voicing and a licensed copy for each singerโas well as the purchase of additional licenses in the future when more copies are made. (For example: For a 30-voice choir, you would buy a license to make 30 copies.) You may also discover from Dalglish recordings that we encourage creative and fresh performance ideas. Go for it!

This piece sets the title poem from Wendell Berryโs first book of poems. The poem, โThe Broken Ground,โ gives a very sensual description of the transforming cycle of earth to bud to flower to seed. The last lines of the poem, โtaken from what was, from what could have been. What is left is what is,โ becomes a wonderful meditation on the mystery of this cycle. This piece should be sung with a pure tone (minimal or no vibrato), and continuous attention to dynamics.
AATB and SSAA versions commissioned by The Jenny Lind Singers of Augustana College, Rock Island, IL (Drew Collins, Conductor) with funds provided by The New Choral Music for Womenโs Voices Commissioning Project.
